WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Himer WordPress theme before version 2.1.1 contains a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability that affects the group section functionality. This security flaw was discovered and publicly disclosed on June 12, 2024, and has been assigned CVE-2024-2233. The vulnerability affects all versions of the Himer theme prior to version 2.1.1 (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from the absence of CSRF protection mechanisms in certain areas of the theme's group functionality. The issue has been classified as CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery) and received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 4.3 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N. CISA-ADP has assessed it with a slightly higher CVSS score of 6.3 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L (NVD).

The vulnerability allows attackers to make logged-in users perform unwanted actions through CSRF attacks. These actions specifically include declining group invitations, accepting group invitations, and leaving groups without the user's consent (WPScan).

The vulnerability can be exploited by crafting a malicious HTML file that, when opened by a logged-in user, can trigger unwanted group-related actions. A proof of concept demonstrates that the attack can be executed by using JavaScript to submit forms automatically (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.1.1 of the Himer WordPress theme. Users are strongly advised to update to this version or later to protect against potential CSRF attacks (WPScan).
