CVE-2024-2500: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The ColorMag WordPress theme contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability (CVE-2024-2500) affecting all versions up to and including 3.1.6. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping of a user's Display Name (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization of the Display Name field in the ColorMag theme. This security flaw allows authenticated users with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (Wordfence).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious web scripts that execute in users' browsers when they visit affected pages. This can lead to various attacks including cookie theft, session hijacking, and other client-side attacks that could compromise user security (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user account with at least contributor-level privileges to exploit. Once authenticated, an attacker can inject malicious scripts through the Display Name field, which will then be stored and executed when other users view pages containing the injected content (NVD).

Users should update their ColorMag theme to a version newer than 3.1.6 once available. Until then, site administrators should carefully monitor and restrict access to user accounts with contributor-level permissions or higher (NVD).
