CVE-2024-27907
Siemens Simcenter Femap vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A vulnerability has been identified in Simcenter Femap (All versions < V2306.0000) tracked as CVE-2024-27907. The vulnerability involves an out-of-bounds write issue that occurs while parsing specially crafted Catia MODEL files. This security flaw was discovered and reported through the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI-CAN-22051) and was publicly disclosed on March 12, 2024 (Siemens Advisory, ZDI Advisory).

Technical details

The vulnerability is classified as an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) that occurs during the processing of MODEL files within the CatiaV4_2022_2 executable. The issue stems from inadequate validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a write operation beyond the bounds of an allocated data structure. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (ZDI Advisory).

Impact

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. The attack requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file, but could lead to complete system compromise with the same privileges as the running application (ZDI Advisory).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires user interaction to exploit, as the target must open a malicious Catia MODEL file. The attack vector is local (AV:L), with low attack complexity (AC:L), requiring no privileges (PR:N) but user interaction (UI:R) (Siemens Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

Siemens has released version V2306.0000 which addresses this vulnerability. Users are strongly recommended to update to this version or later. As a general security measure, Siemens advises users not to open untrusted Catia MODEL files using Simcenter Femap (Siemens Advisory).
