Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-40968 affects the Linux kernel's MIPS architecture, specifically the Octeon PCIe implementation. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on July 12, 2024. The issue occurs in the PCIe configuration read-write interface used to access the configuration space of peripheral PCIe devices on MIPS processors (NVD).

The vulnerability manifests when the PCIe link experiences a surprise down event, which can trigger a kernel panic due to a "Data bus error". This occurs because the system attempts to access the configuration space of PCIe devices without checking the link status. The fix involves adding PCIe link status checks to prevent read-write operations when the link is down or in training state (Kernel Commit).

When exploited, this vulnerability can cause a denial of service condition through a kernel panic on affected MIPS-based systems using the Octeon PCIe implementation (NVD).

The vulnerability requires no special privileges to trigger, as it occurs during normal PCIe device operations when the link state changes unexpectedly. The issue has been confirmed in production environments where PCIe link surprise down events can occur (Kernel Commit).

The vulnerability has been patched in the Linux kernel by implementing PCIe link status checks. When the PCIe link is down or in training, the system now assigns a value of 0 to the configuration address to prevent read-write behavior to the configuration space of peripheral PCIe devices. This fix has been backported to multiple stable kernel versions (Ubuntu Security, Debian LTS).
