Mattermost versions 9.6.0, 9.5.x before 9.5.3, and 8.1.x before 8.1.12 contain a security vulnerability related to role validation. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on April 26, 2024, affecting multiple versions of the Mattermost collaboration platform (NVD).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient validation of role changes in the system. This security flaw allows authenticated users with team admin privileges to elevate guest users to team admin status through specially crafted HTTP requests. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 2.7 (LOW) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, indicating a network-accessible vulnerability requiring high privileges with low impact (NVD).

The primary impact of this vulnerability is the potential for privilege escalation within Mattermost teams. Specifically, team administrators can bypass intended role restrictions to promote guest users to team admin status, potentially leading to unauthorized access to team administration functions (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an attacker to already have team admin privileges, which significantly limits its exploitability. The attack can be executed through crafted HTTP requests, but the attacker must first have authenticated access to the system with elevated permissions (NVD).

Users are advised to upgrade to Mattermost version 9.5.3 or later for the 9.5.x series, or version 8.1.12 or later for the 8.1.x series. For version 9.6.0, users should upgrade to the next available patched version (NVD, Mattermost Security).
