CVE-2024-4392: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Jetpack WordPress plugin (versions up to 13.3.1) contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2024-4392) in its wpvideo shortcode functionality. The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes, allowing authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious web scripts that execute when users access affected pages (WPScan, NVD).

The vulnerability exists in the wpvideo shortcode implementation where certain attributes are not properly sanitized or escaped. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 6.4 (Medium), with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. A proof of concept exploit has been documented using the following payload: [wpvideo OcobLTqC freedom=true preloadContent='"src=x onerror=alert(document.cookie) xss'] (WPScan).

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages that will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised content. This can lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, or other malicious actions performed in the context of the visiting user's browser (NVD).

The vulnerability requires an authenticated user with at least contributor-level access to exploit. The attack vector is network-accessible, with low attack complexity, requiring privileged access but no user interaction (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in Jetpack version 13.4. Users are advised to update to this version or later to protect against this security issue (WPScan).
