PaperCut NG vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

An arbitrary file creation vulnerability (CVE-2024-8405) exists in PaperCut NG/MF that affects Windows servers with Web Print enabled. The vulnerability was discovered in September 2024 and affects PaperCut NG/MF versions up to (excluding) 23.0.9 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists within the web-print.exe process, which can incorrectly create files that don't exist when a maliciously formed payload is provided. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 MEDIUM (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) by NIST and 6.1 MEDIUM (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) by PaperCut (NVD, ZDI).

Impact

This vulnerability can be exploited to flood disk space and result in a Denial of Service (DoS) attack on the affected system. The attack requires local access to execute low-privileged code on the target system (NVD, ZDI).

Mitigation and workarounds

PaperCut has issued an update to correct this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to version 23.0.9 or later to address this security issue (ZDI).
