CVE-2025-24860: 
Apache Cassandra vulnerability analysis and mitigation

An incorrect authorization vulnerability (CVE-2025-24860) was discovered in Apache Cassandra that allows users to access datacenter or IP/CIDR groups they should not be able to when using CassandraNetworkAuthorizer or CassandraCIDRAuthorizer. The vulnerability affects Apache Cassandra versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.15, 4.1.0 through 4.1.7, and 5.0.0 through 5.0.2. The flaw was discovered by Stefan Miklosovic and publicly disclosed on February 3, 2025 (Openwall).

The vulnerability stems from an incorrect authorization implementation that allows users with restricted data center access to bypass network authorization controls. Users can exploit this flaw by updating their own permissions through Data Control Language (DCL) statements. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N (Red Hat).

The vulnerability can lead to significant security implications including unauthorized data access across different data centers, potential data breaches, compromise of the security model, and possible lateral movement within the Cassandra environment. This could result in violations of data privacy regulations and compliance requirements. The primary mitigation is to upgrade to the patched versions: Apache Cassandra 4.0.16, 4.1.8, or 5.0.3.
