CVE-2025-39743
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2025-39743 is a vulnerability discovered in the Linux kernel affecting the JFS (Journaling File System) component. The vulnerability was disclosed on September 11, 2025, and involves an issue with the truncation of inode pages when the hard link count is 0 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs in the JFS filesystem when handling inode pages during eviction. Specifically, when the fileset value of the inode copy from the disk is AGGR_RESERVED_I and the hard link number is 0 during eviction, the inode pages are not properly truncated. This leads to a bugon being triggered during the execution of clear_inode() because nrpages is greater than 0 (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability can cause system instability and potential crashes when handling certain file operations in the JFS filesystem, particularly during the cleanup of inodes with no hard links (NVD).
