WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2025-49855 is a Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability discovered in the Meks Flexible Shortcodes WordPress plugin affecting versions through 1.3.7. The vulnerability was initially reported on May 16, 2025, and publicly disclosed on June 12, 2025 (Wiz, Patchstack).

The vulnerability is classified as a DOM-Based Cross-site Scripting (XSS) issue, with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (Medium). The attack vector requires network access (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), low privileges (PR:L), and user interaction (UI:R) with changed scope (S:C) and low impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:L/I:L/A:L) (Wiz).

The vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when visitors access the affected site (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.3.8 of the Meks Flexible Shortcodes plugin. Users are advised to update to version 1.3.8 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users can enable auto-update functionality for vulnerable plugins (Patchstack).
