CVE-2026-34827:
Ruby vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2026-34827 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Rack, the modular Ruby web server interface, caused by inefficient algorithmic complexity in multipart header parsing. The flaw affects Rack versions 3.0.0.beta1 through before 3.1.21, and 3.2.0 through before 3.2.6. It was published on April 2, 2026, with patches released in versions 3.1.21 and 3.2.6. The vulnerability carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 (High) (GitHub Advisory, Rack Advisory).

Technical details

The root cause lies in Rack::Multipart::Parser#handle_mime_head, which parses quoted multipart parameters (e.g., Content-Disposition: form-data; name="...") using a combination of repeated String#index searches and destructive String#slice! prefix deletion. For parameter values containing dense backslash-escape sequences, this algorithm exhibits super-linear (quadratic) time complexity, classified under CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption), CWE-407 (Inefficient Algorithmic Complexity), and CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). An attacker exploits this by crafting a multipart/form-data request with up to 4,095 parts (the default Rack limit), each containing a long escape-heavy name parameter such as name="a\\a\\a\\a\\...", which forces the parser to perform disproportionately expensive CPU work while staying within normal request size and part-count limits (GitHub Advisory, Rack Advisory).

Impact

Successful exploitation results in excessive CPU consumption on the server during multipart request parsing, leading to a denial-of-service condition. Any Rack application that accepts multipart/form-data requests is potentially affected, including file upload endpoints and standard HTML form handlers. Repeated crafted requests can exhaust application worker threads, reduce throughput, and degrade or fully deny service availability. There is no impact on confidentiality or data integrity (GitHub Advisory).

Exploitability

There is no public proof-of-concept exploit and no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation at this time (Feedly). The vulnerability requires no authentication, no privileges, and no user interaction, making it trivially reachable from the network by any attacker who can send HTTP requests to a vulnerable Rack application. The EPSS score is approximately 0.041% (0.023% per GitHub Advisory), placing it in a low exploitation-probability tier. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

Exploitation steps

  1. Reconnaissance: Identify internet-facing Ruby web applications built on Rack (e.g., Rails, Sinatra) running versions 3.0.0.beta1–3.1.20 or 3.2.0–3.2.5 that expose endpoints accepting multipart/form-data (e.g., file upload forms).
  2. Craft malicious multipart request: Construct an HTTP POST request with Content-Type: multipart/form-data containing up to 4,095 parts. Each part's Content-Disposition header should include a name parameter with a long, backslash-escape-heavy quoted value, e.g., name="a\\a\\a\\a\\..." (hundreds or thousands of \a sequences).
  3. Send the request: Transmit the crafted request to the target endpoint using a tool such as curl, a custom Python script, or a fuzzing framework. The request remains within Rack's default part-count and size limits, bypassing basic input restrictions.
  4. Trigger CPU exhaustion: The vulnerable Rack::Multipart::Parser#handle_mime_head method processes each escape character with repeated String#index and String#slice! calls, causing super-linear CPU usage per part.
  5. Sustain denial of service: Repeat the request in rapid succession to saturate available application worker processes, degrading or denying service to legitimate users (GitHub Advisory, Rack Advisory).

Indicators of compromise

  • Network: Unusual volume of HTTP POST requests to multipart-accepting endpoints (e.g., file upload routes) from a single or small set of IP addresses; requests with abnormally large or repetitive Content-Disposition header values.
  • Logs: Web server or application logs showing repeated POST requests with Content-Type: multipart/form-data that result in slow response times or timeouts; log entries indicating worker process exhaustion or request queue buildup.
  • Process: Sustained high CPU utilization on the Ruby application server process (e.g., ruby, puma, unicorn, passenger) without a corresponding increase in legitimate traffic; application workers becoming unresponsive or restarting frequently.

Mitigation and workarounds

Upgrade Rack to version 3.1.21 (for the 3.1.x branch) or 3.2.6 (for the 3.2.x branch), which fix the parser to avoid repeated rescanning and destructive prefix deletion. As interim mitigations, apply rate limiting or request throttling on multipart upload endpoints, and consider restricting or isolating multipart parsing on untrusted high-volume endpoints. IBM has also issued advisories for affected downstream products including IBM Aspera Faspex, Aspera Enterprise WebApps, Aspera Shares, and API Connect, which should be updated per their respective bulletins (GitHub Advisory, IBM Aspera Faspex, IBM Aspera Shares).

Community reactions

The vulnerability was coordinated and disclosed by ioquatix (Rack maintainer) and reported by TaiPhung217, with remediation development credited to jeremyevans. Ubuntu issued security notice USN-8182-1 addressing the flaw in its packaged version of Rack. IBM published multiple security bulletins covering affected downstream products. No significant broader media coverage or notable social media commentary has been identified beyond standard vulnerability tracking and vendor advisory channels (Ubuntu Advisory, IBM Aspera Faspex).
