GHSA-v9q2-hcqj-ggqr:
JavaScript vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Summary

WebAuthn authentication challenges are stored per user and purpose rather than per sign-in attempt. Starting a new ceremony for an account replaces the outstanding challenge, so a party who knows only the account's email can make the owner's passkey sign-in fail. This works against the goal of GHSA-66gq-4pwg-33jq (passkeys stay usable when others interfere with an account).

Affected code

  • src/services/webauthnChallengeService.ts
  • src/controllers/webauthn.ts (login start and finish)

Fix plan (0.19.4)

  • Bind challenges to the ephemeral token jti and consume only the attempt's own challenge, atomically
  • Per-identity rate limit on login start
