Bentley MicroStation CONNECT vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2022-28646 is a vulnerability discovered in Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.2.034 and earlier versions. The vulnerability was reported on February 16, 2022, and publicly disclosed on April 12, 2022. This security flaw affects both MicroStation CONNECT and Bentley View applications, specifically in their IFC file parsing functionality (Zero Day Initiative, NVD).

The vulnerability is classified as an Out-of-bounds Write (CWE-787) issue that occurs during the parsing of IFC files. When processing crafted data within an IFC file, the application can trigger a write operation past the end of an allocated buffer. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High), with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating local access, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction required (Zero Day Initiative).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. The high severity rating indicates potential complete compromise of system confidentiality, integrity, and availability. However, exploitation requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file or visiting a malicious page (NVD).

Bentley has released version 10.16.03 and later versions to address this vulnerability. Users are recommended to update to these newer versions of MicroStation and MicroStation-based applications. As an additional security measure, users should only open IFC files from trusted sources (Bentley Advisory).
