SAP HANA vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2023-40309 is a critical vulnerability in SAP CommonCryptoLib that was initially disclosed and patched during SAP's September 2023 Patch Day. The vulnerability affects multiple SAP products including CommonCryptoLib 8.0.0, NetWeaver Application Server, Content Server, HANA Database, and various other components (NVD, SOCRadar).

The vulnerability stems from SAP CommonCryptoLib's failure to perform necessary authentication checks, which results in missing or incorrect authorization checks for authenticated users. It has been assigned a critical CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.8 (CRITICAL) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating network accessibility, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed (NVD).

The vulnerability can lead to privilege escalation, allowing attackers to abuse functionality restricted to particular user groups. Depending on the level of privileges acquired, attackers could potentially read, modify, or delete restricted data, which may result in the complete compromise of the affected application (SOCRadar).

SAP has released patches to address this vulnerability. Organizations are strongly advised to apply these security updates as soon as possible. No workarounds have been published, making patch application the only effective mitigation strategy (SOCRadar).
